What silk actually does for skin and hair

Silk is a smooth, tightly woven protein fibre, and that is where its two real advantages come from. It moves against your skin and hair with far less drag than a cotton weave, so there is less friction over a night of turning. And it is much less absorbent than cotton, so it draws less moisture out of your skin and out of whatever you put in your hair before bed.

That is the honest version. It is a better surface to sleep on. We are a shop rather than a clinic, so you will not find us telling you what silk will do to your face.

Our promise to you

We sell one material and a short list of things made from it. That is the whole business, and it is deliberate. A narrow range is the only way we can say something specific and true about every item rather than repeating the same paragraph across sixty products.

Everything is priced in euro, held in stock, and shipped tracked across the EU. If an order is wrong when it arrives, one email reaches a person who can fix it rather than a ticket queue.

We will also tell you when something is not silk. Our satin pillowcase is labelled satin everywhere it appears, because the fastest way to lose a customer is to let them find that out themselves.

Get The Perfect Night Sleep

Silk, as a fabric is a natural body temperature regulator, hence it is capable of absorbing and transpiring sweat or moisture, keeping you cool when it is hot and warm when it is cool, which is ideal for allergy and eczema sufferers.

Silk, sericin and what the fibre is made of

Silk is a protein fibre spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm. It is made mostly of fibroin, the structural filament, held together by sericin, a gum that is largely washed out during processing. Sericin turns up in cosmetic ingredient lists, which is where a lot of the bolder pillowcase marketing comes from.

We would rather be straight with you about it. A pillowcase is not a skincare treatment, and the sericin left in a finished, washed fabric is not doing what a formulated serum does. What a silk case genuinely gives you is a low-friction surface that does not wick moisture away from your skin and hair the way cotton does, night after night.

If your skin is dry, itchy or breaking out, the pillowcase is worth changing more often whatever it is made of. A case you wash weekly beats an expensive one you leave on the bed for a month.

Why buy a silk pillowcase at all

You spend roughly a third of your life with one side of your face and your hair pressed into a pillow. Cotton is a comparatively rough, absorbent weave, so across a night of turning it drags on hair and wicks moisture out of skin.

Silk changes the surface. It is smoother, so there is less friction, and much less absorbent, so it takes less moisture with it. Anything you put in your hair before bed stays in your hair rather than in the pillowcase.

That is the case for it. It is a better surface to sleep against, and it is one of the few upgrades you actually use every single night.

What a silk pillowcase does, and what it does not

What it does is reduce friction and reduce moisture loss. Both are properties of the fibre and the weave, and both are easy to feel within a night or two: less pull on hair, less of a crease pressed into your cheek by morning.

It also handles temperature well. Silk moves heat away from the skin rather than holding it, which is why a silk case feels cool when you first lie down and does not turn clammy the way a polyester satin one can.

What it does not do is treat anything. It will not clear acne, reverse ageing, repair split ends or remove wrinkles, and any shop telling you otherwise is selling you a claim rather than a pillowcase. If you have a skin condition, a dermatologist is the right person to ask.

One honest caveat: a silk case is only as clean as your laundry routine. Change it weekly, more often if you use heavy night creams or hair oils. A cheap case washed often beats an expensive one left on the bed for a month.

Which silk pillowcase should you buy

Start with weight. Ours run 19 to 25 momme, which is the range where the fabric feels substantial without feeling heavy. Below about 16 momme silk is thin and gives out at the seams within a year, and that is where most of the very cheap listings sit.

Then decide silk or satin. If you want the genuine article, take the mulberry silk. If price is the deciding factor, our satin pillowcase gets you most of the smoothness for much less, and we would rather sell you that honestly than sell you thin silk.

Colour is mostly taste, with two practical notes: darker colours hide the marks that night creams leave, and lighter ones show less dye transfer onto very pale hair. Black and red should be washed alone the first time.

Finally check the size and the closure on the product page. An envelope back holds the pillow without a zip against your face, and a case that actually fits your pillow sits flat instead of sliding about.

Is it worth the money

A good silk pillowcase costs several times what a cotton one does, so the fair way to look at it is cost per night. Ours are €49 and, washed properly, a 22 momme case lasts years. Over that life it works out at pennies a night for something you use every single one of them.

It is worth it if you sleep on your side, if you wake with hair that needs redoing, or if you already spend money on what you put on your face and hair before bed and would rather it stayed there.

It is probably not worth it if you sleep on your back and barely move, or if you will not commit to washing it on a cold gentle cycle. Silk repays care and punishes a hot wash, and there is no point paying for a fabric you are going to ruin in a month.

How to choose a silk pillowcase

Four things decide whether a silk pillowcase is any good, and price is not reliably one of them.

Momme is the weight of the silk, the way thread count is used for cotton. Under about 16 momme the fabric is thin and wears through at the edges within a year. Over about 25 it stops feeling fluid and starts feeling like a heavy drape. Ours sit between 19 and 25, which is the band most people mean when they say a case feels like silk.

Grade is the second. 6A is the long, even filament used for good bedding. Shorter fibres give a fabric that pills where your face sits.

Then the weave. Charmeuse is the satin weave used for almost all silk pillowcases, shiny on the face and matte on the reverse. And finally the closure: an envelope back keeps the pillow in without a zip digging into your cheek, which matters more than any of the above once you are actually lying on it.

Silk, satin and cotton, and what the difference costs you

Satin is a weave, not a fibre. A satin pillowcase is usually polyester woven in the satin structure, which is why it can look almost identical to silk in a photograph and cost a fraction as much.

It gets you most of the smoothness. What it does not get you is breathability. Polyester holds heat against your face, so a satin case that felt cool when you lay down often does not stay that way. Mulberry silk handles temperature far better, which is the main reason people who switch tend not to switch back.

Cotton is the opposite trade. It breathes well and washes hot, but it is absorbent and comparatively rough, so it pulls moisture and drags on hair.

We stock both silk and a satin option deliberately, and the satin one is labelled as satin everywhere it appears. If budget is the deciding factor, start there and upgrade later rather than buying thin silk.

Sizing, and why it matters more than people expect

European, UK and US pillow sizes are not the same, and a case that is too big slides around all night while one that is too small strains at the seams.

Each product page lists the sizes that case is made in along with its closure, so check there before ordering rather than assuming. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one: silk has very little stretch and a slightly snug case sits flatter than a loose one.

Looking after silk so it lasts

Silk is a protein, which is the single fact that explains every care instruction.

Wash cold, 30 degrees or under, with a pH neutral detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener and no biological powder, because the enzymes in biological detergents are designed to break down protein and silk is protein. Machine washing is fine on a delicates or silk cycle inside a mesh bag, and the bag matters more than the cycle setting does.

Air dry out of direct sun, never tumble dry, and press with a cool iron on the reverse if you want it crisp. Buy two cases and alternate them, and you will never be caught trying to dry one before bedtime.

What we stock, and what we do not

Mulberry silk pillowcases in thirteen colours, a satin silk pillowcase, mulberry silk sheet sets, and four sleep accessories: a sleep mask, a hair bonnet, newborn mittens, and monogramming if you want a name on the case.

That is the whole range. We do not sell silk pyjamas, nightgowns, robes or loungewear, and we would rather say so plainly than list categories we cannot fill.

Buying from us

Prices are in euro and include VAT where it applies. Delivery is free across the EU on orders over €60 and a flat €22 under that, with a tracking link emailed as soon as your parcel leaves us. Please allow 5 to 7 days.

Payment is by card through Stripe or by PayPal, on an encrypted connection. We never see or store your card details.

As an EU consumer you have 14 days from delivery to withdraw from the order without giving a reason, under the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU. Our own returns policy runs alongside that rather than instead of it, and the full terms are on the refunds and returns page.

Buying silk online without getting caught out

The commonest way to overpay is a listing that says "silk" and means satin. If a product page will not tell you the fibre, the momme and the grade, assume it is polyester.

Be equally wary of a momme figure with no grade beside it, of "19-25 momme" quoted as a range for a single product when it is one number per item, and of prices far under the market for real mulberry silk. Silk is an agricultural product with a floor price. Nobody sells 22 momme 6A at a supermarket price and makes money.

And check who you are buying from. A real trading address, a company name and a working email are the minimum. Ours are all on the about page.

Wholesale and trade

We supply hotels, guest houses, salons and retailers across Europe. Pricing works on volume and on how regularly you reorder, so rather than publish a rate card we would rather quote against what you actually need.

Tell us the products, the quantities and roughly how often on the wholesale page and we will come back with real numbers.

What thread should I pair with Online Silk Store fabrics?
